Les Feldick Bible Study

What do people who live according to the Spirit think about?

Those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. While the lost mind the things of the flesh—old Adam, fleshly appetites, and materialism—the Spirit-led person focuses on the Holy Spirit’s priorities. This reflects the changed desires and lifestyle that accompany salvation, as the Spirit redirects their attention.

Les explains that Paul’s comparison in verse five contrasts the lost individual with the true Christian. The lost person, still in spiritual darkness and blinded by the god of this world, naturally minds the things of the flesh, which is old Adam, and has fleshly appetites, materialism, and no concept of the Spirit. But those who now live according to the Holy Spirit mind the things of the Spirit. Les looks for this change—once hating what Paul says and loving what he once loved, now the reverse—because that complete change in lifestyle and desire is the whole point.

Romans 8:5

For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.
