What does the word carnal normally mean when we see it in Scripture?

Normally, the word carnal refers to the lost individual, one still under the control of old Adam and still in the flesh. Such a person has nothing of eternal life in him whatsoever. To be carnally or fleshly minded is death, because he remains condemned apart from the Son.

Les explains that sometimes Paul speaks of a carnal Christian, a carnal believer—one who is not Spirit-filled and not Spirit-directed. He is a believer, in the body of Christ, but his priorities are mixed up and he is still more in the flesh than in the Spirit. But normally, when we see the word carnal, it means the lost individual, the one still under the control of old Adam, still in the flesh, with nothing of eternal life in him whatsoever. To be carnally or fleshly minded is death. Going back to Jesus' words in John's gospel, he who has the Son has life; he who has not the Son has not life, and the wrath of God abides on him; he is condemned already. These lost people are headed in only one direction: spiritual death, eternal.
