What is the answer to the struggle described in Romans 7?

The answer is Romans chapter 8: the Holy Spirit. The indwelling Spirit becomes the believer's law, providing the way to overcome the old Adam and the struggle with sin described in Romans 7. Christ's death has already provided justification and forgiveness, and the Spirit applies that victory.

Les explains that in the first seven chapters of Romans, Paul lays the groundwork of how we ended up in sin and under condemnation, and how Christ died that we might be justified and forgiven. Then chapter 7 presents the dilemma of how to overcome the old Adam and how to keep it in defeat. Les says the answer is Romans chapter 8, the Holy Spirit. It is that indwelling Spirit that now becomes our law, if you want to put it that way. Les also notes the context of Romans 8:3 is not merely a fact of everyday life like the law of gravity and the law of sin and death, but the Mosaic Law, the Ten Commandments, which was weak through the flesh. He then references Hebrews chapter 8, verse 7.
