How did the Galatians receive the Spirit?

The Galatians received the Spirit by the hearing of faith, not by the works of the law. Paul asks whether they received the Spirit by legal works or by faith's hearing, and the implied answer is faith. This confirms salvation is faith plus nothing, not law-keeping.

Les explains in Galatians chapter 3 that Paul challenges the Galatians: 'Received ye the Spirit... by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?' The evidence of their salvation was the Holy Spirit, and they did not get there by keeping the law. Les connects this to Romans 10:17, where saving faith comes by hearing, not by works, since hearing involves no work.
