What does God want every Christian to do with the Bible?
God wants every Christian to become a student of the Bible and to study it, not merely read it, learning how to study this Book. Scripture is written by God's hand so anyone can understand it, without needing high education or theological training, and believers are to study to show themselves approved, rightly dividing the Word of Truth.
Les explains that the key is not what you think it says, or what someone you heard say, but what does it say. Scripture is not gobbledygook; it is written by the hand of God so anybody can understand it. He gives the example of a Reformer being burned at the stake whose whole reason for living was to get printed Scriptures into the hands of everybody in England; he wanted the Word of God in the hands of every plowboy in England. The plowboys were likely the least educated part of English society, so if they could comprehend the Scriptures, anybody can. Les shares the same impression: you do not have to be highly educated or have great theological education to comprehend the Scriptures. He notes the Dark Ages were precipitated when the church had become so powerful that it pulled the Scriptures away from the common man and brought them into the monasteries, because they felt only monks and the educated could discern the Word of God. But that is not what God intends. God wants every one of us to become students and to study—not just read, which is not studying—but to learn how to study this Book. Les thinks this is what Paul meant when he wrote to Timothy: we are to study to show ourselves approved unto God, rightly dividing the Word of Truth.
