Is John 3:16 the Gospel?

John 3:16 by itself is not the Gospel. The Gospel is the power of God unto salvation, not church membership, baptism, or works. Paul writes that the Gospel is the power of God, and the context points to 1 Corinthians 15:1-4 as the definition of the Gospel message.

Les teaches that John 3:16 is a wonderful verse, but by itself it is not the Gospel. The Gospel is the power of God unto salvation, not church membership, baptism, or a work. Paul is not ashamed of the Gospel of Christ. The context directs us to 1 Corinthians 15:1-4 as the Gospel. Salvation is all-inclusive: when a believer cries out as a sinner and believes Christ died for him, God imputes righteousness, forgives, cleanses, and baptizes him into the body. We know this by faith, not by feeling or sight, because the book says so.

John 3:16

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

More Questions

Does John 3:16 alone contain the gospel?

Les teaches that you cannot find the gospel in John 3:16 alone. He explains that while John 3:16 can be used, it must be brought into full flow by Paul's gospel—that Christ died for our sins, was buried, and rose again. These basic truths come from Paul, and then we can go back into other Scriptures and make applications. He gives Isaiah 53 as another favorite chapter, noting that without the knowledge of Paul's gospel, no one would get the gospel out of it. Les stresses using all of Scripture carefully and not being maligned as too narrow.
