What is the proof that you have eternal life?
Assurance of eternal life rests on the indwelling Holy Spirit. When the Spirit of God dwells in someone, that one is not in the flesh but in the Spirit, in Christ, and is now a child of God; this indwelling Spirit is the proof of the pudding.
Les explains that the proof is the indwelling Holy Spirit. He says the believer is not in the flesh, not under the control of old Adam, but is in the Spirit and in Christ. The position has changed: the person is no longer in the flesh but is now a child of God. The condition is “if so be”—if genuine salvation has occurred—that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Les calls this the proof of the pudding, the proof that you have eternal life. He then turns to Ephesians 1, a verse he likes to use.
But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.
