What brings Paul into captivity in Romans 7:23?
In Romans 7:23, the law or fact of life in his members—old Adam—warring against the law of his mind brings Paul into captivity. This indwelling old Adam, under Satan's control, captures him despite his delight in God's inward law.
Les explains that Romans 7:23 introduces another fact of life: another law warring against the law of his mind. This is a warfare between the new nature and the old, and it brings him into captivity to the fact of life that old Adam is in his members. Old Adam is under Satan's control, yet Christ in the person of the Holy Spirit dwells within and can give victory over this adversary. Les notes the Holy Spirit's power is not yet mentioned until chapter 8, so Paul cries, "Oh, wretched man that I am."
But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.
