Why did the old Adam need to be replaced immediately when he is crucified?

When old Adam is crucified, something must immediately replace him; otherwise the believer would become an empty entity. God therefore replaces old Adam with the new nature—the divine nature—created in the believer by God's creative work at salvation.

Les explains that Romans chapter 7 deals with how to handle old Adam as over against the new divine nature that Christ places in us at salvation. He notes that when Adam is crucified, there had to be something to immediately replace him, or we would be an empty entity. But God does replace old Adam with the new nature, the divine nature that comes from God by a creative work. Paul is writing to believers who know the law, showing that law has dominion over a man only as long as he lives, and that death is the only way to sever some things.
