Why is the majority of Christendom trying to take away the gift aspect of salvation?

Much of Christendom rejects salvation as a free gift because it insists people must work for it and do something to earn it. That mindset replaces the gift with human effort, even though good works and the manifestation of saving faith belong only after salvation, not as its condition.

Les teaches that the major majority of even Christendom tries to take away the gift aspect of salvation, wanting to work for it instead. They think they have to do something. He qualifies that he is speaking about salvation itself. After someone has entered into salvation, other things must fall in place: good works, the manifestation of saving faith, bringing honor and glory to God, and, as the Catechism says, enjoying Him alone forever. Works therefore follow salvation rather than cause it.
