How did God credit righteousness to Abraham?

God credited righteousness to Abraham when Abraham believed God. His believing was counted unto him for righteousness. God imputed the very righteousness of God to him, declaring him justified so far as God was concerned, even though Abraham had done nothing—he simply believed what God said.

Les explains that Scripture says Abraham believed God, and that believing was counted to him for righteousness. It modifies his believing, not any work. Les teaches that by simply believing what God said, God imputed to Abraham the very righteousness of God Himself. God could then look at Abraham and say, as far as I am concerned, you have never sinned; you are justified. Abraham had done nothing—he believed. As a result of his believing, he left town.
