What kind of man was Lot, and how did the wickedness around him affect him?

Lot was a just or righteous man. The wickedness around him—the filthy manner of living of the wicked—vexed him, meaning it kept him in constant turmoil. Scripture presents him as righteous yet deeply distressed by the ungodly lifestyle surrounding him in Sodom.

Les explains that the text calls Lot just or righteous, and says he was vexed—constantly in turmoil—over the filthy manner of living of the wicked. The surrounding wickedness was not neutral to him; it distressed him. Les connects this to Sodom and Gomorrah, which God destroyed as an example because their sin was the homosexual lifestyle. He notes it was an instantaneous, disciplinary action, not the same suffering as the tribulation, and it stands as an example to those who would live ungodly. Les also stresses he is not being judgmental, saying that but for God's grace he could be in that same place, but by God's grace one can be delivered out of it.
