What does it mean to be crucified with Christ?

To be crucified with Christ means God has reckoned believers as put to death in Christ. Crucifixion only puts to death, and because every sinner must die under God's law, Christ died in our place. Believers experience that same death in Him, which is called substitution.

Les explains that being crucified with Christ is one of the acts of God done on our behalf; no man can touch these things, for God did it by Himself alone. He has reckoned believers as crucified with Christ, and crucifixion can only put to death. In God's mind, believers have been put to death. This connects to the first law given to Adam and Eve: the day they ate, they would surely die, and the soul that sinneth shall surely die. Since the law determines every human being is a sinner as a son of Adam, every human being must die—we had to die. Les calls this a loophole: God provided that Christ died in our place. Yet believers still must experience the same death He experienced in the person of Christ, which is substitution. The context then points to Romans 6:6.

Romans 6:6

Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.
