What did Jesus command the twelve about Gentiles and Samaritans in Matthew 10?

In Matthew 10, Jesus commanded the twelve not to go into the way of the Gentiles and not to enter any city of the Samaritans. Instead, He directed them to go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel, confining their mission to Israel.

Les explains that in Matthew 10:5 Jesus had just chosen the twelve in Galilee and sent them out with specific instructions: they were not to go into the way of the Gentiles or enter any city of the Samaritans. Instead, they were to go to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. Les emphasizes this directed their mission only to Israel. He notes Jesus Himself confined His earthly ministry to Israel for three years, with only two exceptions—the Roman centurion and the Canaanite woman, whom He initially ignored while the twelve said to send her away because she was a Gentile. Les teaches this is not a contradiction but a change of program: after Israel was set aside, God turned to the Gentiles, so Paul could write of obedience to the faith among all nations, not just Israel but every Gentile nation.
