What kind of living arrangement did Paul have while under arrest in Rome?

Paul was placed under house arrest in Rome. He was permitted to live in his own rented house, though always with Roman soldiers at his side. Acts 28:16 records that he was allowed to dwell by himself with a soldier or guard who kept him.

Les explains that Paul entered Rome under arrest, with Roman soldiers probably chained to him. When he reached Rome, the authorities put him under what today we call house arrest. They let him live in his own rented house, but always with Roman soldiers at his side. Acts 28:16 says the centurion delivered the prisoners to the captain of the guard, yet Paul was permitted to dwell by himself with a soldier or guard who kept him. Les notes Paul still had a heart for Israel, and after three days he called the chief of the Jews together. He told them he had committed nothing against Israel or the customs of the fathers, yet was delivered prisoner from Jerusalem into Roman hands. They examined him and would have let him go, but the Jews spoke against it, so he was forced to appeal to Caesar for the protection of the Roman government. He was bound with a chain for the hope of Israel.

Acts 28:16

And when we came to Rome, the centurion delivered the prisoners to the captain of the guard: but Paul was suffered to dwell by himself with a soldier that kept him.
