Why should I become skilled in Scripture?

Believers should become skilled in Scripture so that when an opportunity comes to share it, they can speak clearly rather than stumble, simply saying what it says, turning to a few verses, and showing others what the Word really says. God uses human instruments to lead others to salvation.

Les teaches that God did not leave the Word in the hands of angels but in the hands of people, and He has almost always used one human instrument to lead another person to a knowledge of salvation. That is why he urges believers to learn and get skilled in the Scripture: so that when an opportunity to share arises, they do not have to be a stumble-bum, but can simply say, "This is what it says," turn to a few verses, and show someone what the Word really says. As he puts it, that is what we are here for. The account of Lydia illustrates the pattern: her heart was opened, she attended to the things Paul said, and she became a believer when she was baptized.
