What is the gospel that saves us?

The gospel that saves is the one Paul delivered: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, was buried, and rose again the third day according to the Scriptures. It is not another gospel; by it believers are saved, standing in it, if they hold fast what was preached unless they believed in vain.

Les teaches that Paul is declaring “the gospel,” not merely a gospel, meaning it is the one and only gospel. Paul preached it to them, they received it, they stand in it, and by it they are saved. Les stresses that a person must understand and know what he believes, keeping in memory what Paul preached unless he believed in vain. Paul then defines the gospel he delivered and received: Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, was buried, and rose again the third day according to the Scriptures. Les notes the Old Testament foretold this, though in veiled language they could not fully understand, yet it was there. He then directs attention to Romans 1 to delineate the plan of salvation, helping people understand how to get right with God and have assurance that if they die in the next hour they will be in His presence and not the other way.
