What did Peter and John understand about Jesus in Acts 3?

In Acts 3, Peter and John understood that Jesus was the Messiah, the Son of God, and that He had proved it by His miracles. They did not yet understand what God would accomplish through Christ's death, burial, and resurrection, and they saw Him as only for the nation of Israel.

Les explains that Peter and John in Acts chapter 3 still had not come to an understanding of what God was going to put on the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ. As yet, all they understood was that He was the Messiah, He was the Son of God, and He had proved it with His miracles, but He was only for the nation of Israel. God had not blanked the Gentiles out of His thinking; He would use the favored covenant nation to reach out to pagan, idolatrous Gentiles at the appropriate time. But Israel was dragging their feet, so that time had not yet come. This fits the principle that the secret things belong unto the Lord our God, and He reveals them only periodically.
