What happened to Stephen right before the great persecution in Acts 8?

Stephen was put to death by stoning immediately before the great persecution in Acts 8. Saul was consenting to Stephen's death, and at that time a great persecution arose against the church at Jerusalem, causing Jewish believers to scatter throughout Judea and Samaria.

Les explains that in Acts chapter 8, verse 1, Stephen had just been put to death by stoning. Saul was consenting to Stephen's death, and at that same time a great persecution broke out against the church at Jerusalem. Les points out this occurred about seven years after Pentecost, and the persecution was especially against Jewish believers in Jerusalem and Judea. As a result, the Jewish believers were all scattered abroad throughout the regions of Judea and Samaria.

Acts 8:1

And Saul was consenting unto his death. And at that time there was a great persecution against the church which was at Jerusalem; and they were all scattered abroad throughout the regions of Judaea and Samaria, except the apostles.
