How much should a husband love his wife according to Ephesians 5?

According to Ephesians 5, a husband should love his wife with the same total love Christ has for the church—a sacrificial love that goes to the point of death. He must be willing to give his life for her, just as Christ died for the church, treating her as Christ treats His body.

Les explains that Ephesians 5:25 commands, 'Husbands, love your wives,' and the measure is Christ's own love for the church. Husbands are to have the same attitude toward their wife that Christ has toward the church—total love to the point that He died for her. Les asks how many American husbands today would actually die for their wives, then concludes, 'that's how much we're to love her.' He notes Scripture never commands wives to love their husbands, but husbands are commanded to love their wives. This goes back to creation: God gave Adam the ability to love his helpmate and Eve the ability to respond. When a husband loves his wife as Christ loves the church, there is no divorce problem or need for a lawyer.
