Who is the King of kings and Lord of lords mentioned in Isaiah's prophecy about the government being on His shoulder?
The King of kings and Lord of lords is Christ, the promised Messiah, whose birth in Bethlehem fulfilled Isaiah’s prophecy. He is identified as the Prince of Peace, and the context further declares that He is also God the Father, ruling Israel and the whole world from David’s throne.
Les explains that when Christ was born in Bethlehem, the government would be upon His shoulder. This points to the earthly kingdom He spoke of in His earthly ministry, the kingdom all Old Testament prophecy looked forward to, where a King of kings and Lord of lords will rule not only Israel but the whole world. It will be perfect, with no sin, corruption, or rotten politics. Les notes that everyone knows the Prince of Peace was Christ, but many do not know He is also God the Father. He also connects this to the increase of His government and peace upon the throne of David, and to Matthew’s Gospel, which presents Christ as King and traces His genealogy back to Abraham, not Adam, because the coming King comes out of the Abrahamic Covenant.
