For what purpose did God perform the signs in John's Gospel?

God performed the signs in John’s Gospel to point the nation of Israel to their dire need. These signs were done by the eternal Creator God, yet directed to Israel so they would recognize their need before He could fulfill all the covenant promises.

Les explains that the signs in John’s Gospel were performed by the eternal Creator God, but their purpose was directed to the nation of Israel. He was pointing them to Israel to show them their dire need before He could fulfill all those covenant promises. This fits the setting where the Temple was going full speed ahead at Christ’s earthly ministry, and even after Pentecost believing Jews like Ananias remained devout law-keepers. Peter still resisted eating unclean things, showing Israel’s condition under the Law. The signs thus served to expose Israel’s need.
