What does the Greek word dunamis mean?
The Greek word dunamis means power, specifically supernatural power. It is the term from which the English word dynamo derives. In Scripture, it describes the divine power by which miracles were performed, since Christ acted by the power He possessed as God.
Les explains that Hebrews 2:4 contains all three Greek words that the New Testament often translates as “miracles.” The first, semaion, is always a sign and should be translated “signs.” The second, dunamis, is the source of the word dynamo and refers to power, supernatural power. It answers how Christ performed His miracles: He did so because of the power He had as God. The third, teros, simply means wonders.
