Should a believer move into a deeper spiritual life by the flesh or legalism?
No. Scripture calls it foolish to begin in the Spirit and then try to mature by the flesh. The flesh desires legalism and Law, but believers are delivered from the Law's oldness of the letter to serve in newness of spirit. Deeper spiritual life comes by believing the Gospel, faith plus nothing, not fleshly legalism.
Les explains from Galatians 3:3 that having begun in the Spirit by Paul's Gospel through faith plus nothing, it is foolish to think one moves into a deeper spiritual life by the flesh. The flesh, especially in the Galatian churches, wants legalism and Law. Believers are delivered from the Law, an administration of death, and now serve in newness of spirit, not the oldness of the letter. The way there is to believe the Gospel.
Are ye so foolish? having begun in the Spirit, are ye now made perfect by the flesh?
