Who went behind the temple veil and how often?

Aaron the High Priest went behind the veil, and only once a year on the Day of Atonement. The veil separated the sanctuary where priests ministered daily from the Holy of Holies, where the Ark of the Covenant and God's presence were. This annual entry was the only access behind the veil.

Les explains that the veil in the tabernacle and later the temple separated the sanctuary, where priests ministered daily, from the Holy of Holies, which contained the Ark of the Covenant and the presence of God. Only Aaron the High Priest went behind that veil, and only once a year on the Day of Atonement. After Solomon's temple was built, the veil was so thick and heavy that Josephus indicates a team of oxen could not have ripped it apart. Yet Scripture says it was ripped in two from top to bottom, proving men had nothing to do with it. This was a miracle-working God, showing that the way into God's presence was made possible by His death, because the veil symbolized His body of flesh.
