Why did Roman soldiers reportedly dismantle the temple stone by stone?

Roman soldiers reportedly dismantled the temple stone by stone because some had heard that tons of gold were hidden between the building blocks, and they sought that gold. This action also fulfilled Jesus' prophecy that not one stone would be left upon another.

Les explains that when Nebuchadnezzar destroyed the temple, he did it by fire, because it was predominantly cedar wood and burned like a matchbox. The Romans, however, even though they used a lot of fire, did not just destroy it with fire; they literally dismantled that temple rock by rock and stone by stone. Les notes there are many legendary stories about why they did it. Some Roman soldiers had heard that tons of gold were hidden between the building blocks of the temple, so in order to go after that gold, they took it down stone by stone. Les says this is exactly what Jesus was talking about in prophetic utterance in chapter 24, where He said there would not be left one stone upon another that would not be thrown down.
