Why was the sheep caught in the crevice crying?

The sheep caught in the crevice was crying because it was lost and knew it. In contrast to the other sheep that wandered off and did not know they were lost, this one was aware of its condition and cried out in distress.

Les explains that the ninety-nine are left in the wilderness while the shepherd goes after the one that is lost until he finds it. He notes that sheep are dumb and, if left on the desert, will scatter and be lost without realizing it. But the little one caught in a crevice cries his heart out because he is lost and knows it.
