What happened to Jonah in the type or picture when the great fish swallowed him?
The type or picture teaches that Jonah died for all practical purposes. After being thrown overboard, the great fish took him, and his experience pictured death, not mere survival. Jesus Himself referred to Jonah’s account, confirming that it is true.
Les teaches that Jonah is presented as a type or picture. God told Jonah to go to Nineveh, a Gentile city, but Jonah did not want to go. He was like Peter in Acts chapter 10 when the Lord told him to go to Cornelius. Jonah tried to go west on the Mediterranean; the sailors threw him overboard, and a great fish took him, about like an Oklahoma bass would take a minnow. In the picture, when the fish swallowed him, for all practical purposes Jonah died. Jesus referred to the account of Jonah Himself, so we know it is true. The unit places this in the same light as Gentiles being outside Israel’s covenant promises and Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection before Gentiles could be the object of faith.
