What did Isaiah 9:6 promise about the child born to Israel and the government?

Isaiah 9:6 promised that unto Israel a child is born and a son is given, and the government shall be upon His shoulder. The context presents this as the promise of that part of the covenant, identifying the promised King whose rule rests on Him.

Les explains that Isaiah chapter 9, verses 6 and 7, is the promise of that part of the covenant. The prophet writes again to the nation of Israel: “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given,” and then the government shall be upon His shoulder. Les asks who this will be that is going to be the government, tying it to the promised King. Everything Jesus says and does is to prove to the Jew of his day that He is this promised King.

Isaiah 9:6

For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

More Questions

Why is there a parenthesis in Isaiah 9:6 between the son given and the government?

In Isaiah 9:6, the parenthesis goes after 'son is given,' because the child born and son given happened at Jesus' first advent to Israel, but the government upon His shoulder (His kingdom) has not yet occurred.

On whose shoulder will the future government rest according to Isaiah 9:6?

The future government will rest on the shoulder of the Son who was given, that is, the same Son described in Isaiah 9:6 and John 3:16.
