Could animal blood take away sin?

No. Hebrews 9 explains that the Old Testament sacrificial system was only a figure for the time then present. Its gifts and sacrifices could not make the one who served perfect in conscience. The blood of animals could not take away sin.

Les teaches from Hebrews chapter 9, rehearsing the Day of Atonement. The High Priest entered the Holy of Holies alone once every year, never without blood, which he offered for himself and for the people. The Holy Spirit signified that the way into the holiest of all was not yet made manifest while the first tabernacle stood. Les explains that this Old Testament economy was a figure, symbol, or illustration for the time then present. The gifts and sacrifices offered could not make the one who did the service perfect as pertaining to the conscience. As Les puts it, the whole sacrificial system in itself did not take away sin; the blood of animals could not take away sin. He says that is not the main point he wants to make, then moves to verse 10.

Hebrews 9:9
