How did the four women in Jesus' genealogy come to be honored despite their disobedience to God?
By God’s mercy and grace, not their own merit. Though these four women stood in direct opposition to everything God had instructed, His grace abounded beyond their sin and brought them into a place of renown by placing them in the genealogy.
Les explains that Romans 5:20 shows where sin abounded, grace did much more abound. Even when people in the genealogy fell low, God’s grace was able to go beyond it. God’s grace has always been evident, even though we are not under the program of grace. When Adam sinned, God did not wait for Adam to seek Him; God went looking for Adam and Eve on the basis of grace. Israel repeatedly turned from Jehovah, yet God returned to them by grace. In the same way, these four women were in direct opposition to everything God had instructed, but in His mercy and grace He brought them into a place of renown by putting them in the genealogy.
