What did Christ do when He died my death?

Christ died the death that belonged to us, took that death away, and imparted eternal life in the area of the spirit together with a new divine nature. By identification with His death, the old Adam is crucified, and believers are also identified with His resurrection.

Les explains that as Christ died our death and took it away, He also imparted eternal life in the area of the spirit and the new divine nature. That part of us will one day be ushered into His presence; then we will pick up the new body and become active in the overall plan of God, more in the kingdom yet to come. In Romans 6, Paul uses the illustration of planting: if we have been planted together in the likeness of His death, we shall also be in the likeness of His resurrection. The seed dies, and out of that death comes new growth. If our old Adam has died and been crucified, and we have been identified in His death, then we shall also be identified in His resurrection.
