Did the disciples expect Jesus to die and rise from the dead?

No. The disciples did not expect Jesus to die, and after His death they did not expect Him to rise. The resurrection was totally blanked out for them; even after seeing Him they struggled to accept it and were terrified, supposing they saw a spirit.

Les explains that the disciples were not expecting resurrection. They had no idea in the first place that He was going to die, and then when He died, they had no idea He was going to rise from the dead. None whatsoever; that was totally blanked out for them. Even after it happened and they had already seen Him once, they still had a hard time accepting it. When Jesus Himself stood in the midst of them and said, 'Peace be unto you,' they were terrified and affrighted and supposed they had seen a spirit. He invited them to behold and handle His hands and feet, showing that a spirit does not have flesh and bone as He did. While they yet believed not, although full of joy and wonder, He asked for food, and they gave Him a piece of broiled fish and a honeycomb, and He ate. Then He opened their understanding that they might understand the Scriptures.
