What did Augustine believe about when Satan was bound?
Augustine believed Satan was defeated and locked up at the Crucifixion and Resurrection, placing the Church already in the Kingdom. He held that this binding meant no future Tribulation or Second Coming was needed, and he precipitated Amillennialism, teaching that Israel’s promises now belonged to the Church and no prophecy remained to be fulfilled.
Les explains that Augustine, a great Roman Catholic bishop, followed the concept that since Christianity was now usurping the planet, the Kingdom would be brought in without a future Tribulation or Second Coming because the Church is the literal Kingdom. Augustine went so far as to feel Satan was defeated and locked up at the time of the Crucifixion and the Resurrection, so they were already in the Kingdom. Les notes that it wasn't too long after Augustine that the world was already slipping deeper and deeper into sin, and they realized that wasn't true. Augustine precipitated Amillennialism, the view that all the promises given to Israel had now been given to the Church, and there was no prophecy left to fulfill. The Reformers, Martin Luther, Calvin, and all the rest, were so caught up in salvation and faith and doing away with Roman Catholic excesses that they never considered eschatology or end-time events.
