What does it mean that the Law was beggarly?

The Law was beggarly because it was fleshly and weak, unable to make a person perfect or right with God. It could not generate salvation; that comes by the Spirit through the hearing of faith, not by the works of the Law.

Les explains that the flesh is a reference to the Law, and the Law was fleshly, weak, and beggarly. Having begun in the Spirit—the work of the Holy Spirit that generated salvation because of their faith—the Galatians could not now be made perfect, or right with God, by the flesh, that is, by the Law. The Law could not do what the Spirit does. Faith is taking God at His Word: God said it, we believe it, and God recognizes it and moves in to do everything that needs to be done. Scripture says it is by faith, not the works of the Law.
