Why were there so few true believers in the Old Testament?

There were few true believers in the Old Testament because the Gentile world had no knowledge of salvation, and even within Israel only a relatively small number were true believers. Many in Israel followed Baal and other pagan gods. So the Old Testament was not the main harvest; God's greatest gathering came later.

Les explains that throughout Old Testament history there were only precious few believers. The Gentile world had no knowledge of salvation, and even in the nation of Israel very few were true believers; many followed Baal and went into the worship of other pagan gods. By contrast, after the cross, with the advent of Christianity and the Church Age, God has garnered the greatest percentage of His total harvest during the last 2,000 years. The Reformation and the great evangelists of the last 100 or 200 years saw humongous amounts of people become believers. This main harvest is the Church, the Body of Christ, the true born-again child of God, regardless of denominational handle, as long as he is in the Body of Christ.
